Welcome to the Performing Arts Field Group

We surely have the most exciting area of all - poised as it is between performance, publication, education, and entertainment. Your committee represents the following societies and most of you are members of one or more of these.

American Musicological Society - Robert Judd
American Society for Theatre Research - Franklin Hildy
Association for Theatre in Higher Education - Gary Maciag
Society for American Music - Kate & Robert Keller

We hope that, when our weekend is over, we will have some exciting project ideas to take back to our various societies for action.

As we look over the impressive array of questionnaire responses in our area, three themes come through quite strongly:

First is the use of resources. A major need is for access to primary sources. Issues of cataloging, indexing, preserving, and just locating primary sources were mentioned by many respondents.

A second theme was the need for tools to facilitate research.

Finally, barriers for scholarship came up often, including the need for professional recognition of collaborative work and of digital publication and the vexing issues of validation and fair use.

Working together, we have developed the list of websites, you'll find below, describing imaginative projects that respond to some of these knotty problems and issues. It would be very helpful if we all looked at these beforehand so that we will have a common starting point as we gather in Washington to survey the field and think about the future.

WIth great hopes for our discussions,

Kate Keller
