PUBLIC INTEREST TASK FORCE

Conference Call: June 23, 1998

Although David started off by distinguishing between materials/tools we needed to prepare, versus strategies and goals for the Public Interest campaign, we quickly came to discuss the importance of "selling" NINCH to our own community, or rather of reinforcing and strengthening our home base before launching into a really major campaign with other partners.

Susan used the image of concentric circles: with NINCH's home "practitioner" constituency first, followed by "trade press", followed by others (perhaps these that were defined in the December 12 meeting: policymakers; the cultural community; the educational community; legal counsels; the private sector; and the general public). We could also think of staggered and parallel timelines: one for the preparation of materials and messages internally and one for the larger external campaign.

Everyone agreed that it was now time to have a good, professional modular presentational packet on NINCH, both to attract new members but perhaps more importantly to lock-in our own members. One of the issues that has come up, especially with executive directors and other contacts with members that move on is the need to "institutionalize" NINCH with our members, rather than depend upon the enthusiasm and understanding of key individuals.

This package would both present our achievements to date, with testimony from members and others, and pose a survey of members' expectations and needs of NINCH

One agenda item for the July 31 meeting will thus be the examination of a prototype package of material that would include:

The July 31 meeting would thus help in shaping the October 26 NINCH Membership meeting.

Coming out of this would be the preparation of a timeline and outline for the Internal project as well as for the Public Interest Campaign.

One set of material for the Public Interest campaign that we could start gathering are emblematic stories, accounts, anecdotes of the effect of networking cultural heritage (with an emphasis on Public Domain material). Kathe and Pat volunteered to begin gathering such stories.
